's chris palone near the scene with the latest. >> reporter: at the hour in newtown, connecticut, people are starting to gather in at least three local churches holding prayer vigils for the victims' families. police say it could take up to two more days to identify all the victims and collect all the clues at the elementary school here near me. the big question on everyone's mind tonight is why? imaginable horror. more than a dozen elementary schoolchildren brutally murdered by a gunman who walked into a school and opened fire. >> there were 18 children pronounced dead at the scene. there were two children transported to area hospital, pronounced dead at the hospital. there were six adults that were pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: frantic parents rushed back to the school, desperate for any information about their children. >> we just ran like every other parent and we found out we couldn't get to the school. >> i drove from work. i work in bridgeport. i drove back up here. it was the longest drive of my life, it was really hard not knowing. >> reporter: teachers barricaded t

. >>> we begin the broadcast with a shooting in newtown, connecticut. 90 minutes of new york city. >> all the new details. >> mandy, the shooting happened this morning just after 9:30. that's when police got a 911 call. connecticut state police officials say that on and off duty officers reported to the school. they immediately began a search and an evacuation of the school. the shooter was found on scene deceased inside the building. as you mentioned, 18 children and 8 adults among those killed. the shooter as well also dead. officials tell nbc news a second person is in custody, wanted for questioning with relation to this shooting. officials have not confirmed those numbers saying that they are still notifying next of kin. the white house was notified this morning of the shooting and said like so many parents everywhere today, their hearts go out and they feel enormous, enormous sympathy to what the parents here and this community are going through. >> absolutely. it's completely tragic. thank you very much for the update. we will continue to monitor the situation as the developments u

to the pete of newtown, connecticut, a town shattered by friday's shooting and elementary school. 26 people were killed, including 20 children, before the gunman killed himself. speaking at the service, the president noted this was the fourth time he's had to console a community during his time in office. and he demanded changes in the way the u.s. deals with gun violence. >> we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex. and that is true. no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for ip action. surely we can do better than this. >> the president says he will meet with a group of law enforcement parents and teachers in an effort to prevent future tragedies. several democratic lawmakers are now calling for a new push on tougher u.s. gun laws, including a ban on military-style assault weapons. >>> we'll take a short break. still to come, why china's new leaders see a future where economic growth isn't driven so much by exports. we'll have the latest. i always wait until

in newtown. a lot of different things. in front of us is the fiscal cliff. everybody has been talking about it. we've been talking about it. here we are past christmas getting very close to the 31st and still nothing resolved. for those reasons i think people are holding off. they're going to make some decisions later on. maybe those decisions don't happen until january. >> joe, you can blame what you want. you can say it's hurricane sandy, the fiscal cliff, discretionary the second best performing sector in the s&p here to date. is this a sign to start taking money off the table if you have it in the retailers? >> i think you categorize it by saying it's sprung a little bit of a leak. year to date, they've been strong. what do the allocations do? clearly you've looked at the u.s. economy and you've said it's been the services over the goods. money managers are taking a look at the potential recovery in manufacturing. they're looking at softening and consumer discretionary. it is on the back of sandy. it's moving into the materials and industrials. >> weiss, the rlx hit a historic high in e

want to express our thoughts and prayers that everyone affected by this terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut. our words can do little to ease your pain. but you know this. we are with you in this incredible difficult time. and recognize that you are who we are thinking about, even as we try to focus on our work today. so as for the markets, it was another weak day. dow dipped 36 points. s&p gave up .41%. nasdaq declined .70. a lot of that again because of apple. you know the drill as we head into the weekend. i'm not expecting to hear any progress on the fiscal cliff. but you know, i always watch the sunday morning talk shows now very closely and i'm looking for some politicians saying something encouraging. what does encouraging mean? it means a republican uttering the two words tax increase without the word no before it. and the democrats uttering two words, spending cuts, without the word no before them. neither seems to be able to pull off that syntax, though. at this point i think we've got to assume that the washington people, they can't get it together. we've got to gird
